Having raced and cruised for 49 years in sailboats from 8 feet to 30 feet. I can say for a fact that a sail boat is much more maneuverable than any motor boat. If a competent skipper has good visibility and the water is reasonably flat (no waves) it is very possible to pass within inches of an object in the water. When in the water it's always important to be sure any boaters see you.
Congrats! Speaking of Tahoe feats, check this out from last winter:http://www.telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=33427

Quite the epic!
Justin,Very cool trip. Any photos or videos? ;-)I suspect that you have lots of good stories to tell.
Justin just had a few photos. Kind of hard to get pics when you're swimming solo!
I was wondering how he got that photos that were shown.
Wow - can't believe you did the swim without a wetsuit - Lake Tahoe is cold!!! Cool photos! Tahoe Girl
