About Me I'm an outdoor enthusiast that grew up playing in the woods behind my house as well as doing weekend car camping and trout fishing trips in North Georgia's mountains. A few years ago, I rediscovered my love of the wilderness and started hiking and backpacking on weekends. After a miserable trip where I carried 40+ pounds of traditional gear, I immediately replaced everything with lightweight gear and then again with ultralight gear. I'd say I've settled around the upper limits of ultralight loads.

Sid, They are heavy, but the weight it also on the front, wich makes the wight negligable, as it works as a counter balance. Weight is not negligible. Doesn't matter where it's carried, ...

Re: Bottom down.
When down is compressed, as it would be when underneath a body, it provides negligible insulation value. A proper pad is the most important thing between you and the ground.
