About Me I grew up in VA exploring and camping the woods around my house. As a teen in the 80's I learned how to backpack by reading books. Back then my pack weight was a respectable 27 lbs and I hit the woods every chance I got. Once adult life took over it was rare to take an overnighter. I faced several challenges during my middle age life and turned to the outdoors to restore me. As my knowledge and skills advanced, my base weight dropped to below 5 lbs. With this came a freedom that I had never experienced before.

Re: Re: Shining Rock Wilderness/Pisgah Trip
Andy, Don't worry about bear stories. I was up that way when they closed the area down after the first night because of bear activity. I had not seen such a large area closed before. They basic...

Re: Reply
Jeremy, I'm not a fleece user for backpacking because of the warmth to weight ratio for down or synthetics. That being said I think a lightweight fleece jacket or pullover is one of the best it...

Re: SUL Backpacks
Going below 8 oz for a pack really limits your materials, surface area/volume and features in a pack. You pretty much need to leave dyneema behind and stick with cuben (or silnylon). I see more MYO...

James, The bivy looks great. Job well done. I really like how the side zip turned out. I have yet to build a bivy that zips down the side. But thinking I need to add the extra .5 oz to make a side ...

James, Here is my MYOG bivy under a small cuben tarp. I recommend creating a pseudo bath tub floor by sewing both ends to form a box like a stuff sack bottom is made. It is extremely easy to do and...
