My Locale Southeast
About Me I've been backpacking for several years, and am not an ultralight guy...I'm probably teetering on the line between light weight and traditional. I normally carry 25 - 35 lbs (total weight including food and water). I typically go on 5 - 6 trips a year consisting of weekend trips with a longer (1 - 2 weeks) one mixed in there. I have been section hiking the AT since late '07, and am a quarter of the way through it. Other than the AT and local hikes I have also hiked in the Sierras and Southern Utah.

Re: new hiker
Certain portions of the AT have provisions for hanging food. I believe there are bear cables at all of the shelters in GSMNP, and there are also bear cables in GA. NJ has bear boxes (kinda like t...

Re: New Guy . . .be gentle :)
1. Don't have that pack so can't comment. 2. I line my pack with a trash compactor bag and just stuff my sleeping bag down in there without the stuff sack. 3. If you want to be entert...

Re: New Balance 910v1 and 1210 (Leadville)
I bought a pair of the 1210s and did a 38 mile hike in them last weekend. I found them to be a great pair of shoes. They are light, but have a decent amount of cushioning as well as stability. I...

Re: Water treatment
I use the Steripen Opti with Aqua Mira for backup. I don't know your location (I assume you are in the US), but you can mail order the CR123 batteries and get them for a reasonable price. I g...

New Balance 910v1 and 1210 (Leadville)
Has anyone on here tried either one of these shoes yet? I'm particularly interested in comments on the 1210. Both shoes look similar, but I have read comments online that state that the 1210 ...

Re: Simple Water Scoop and Pre-Filter
I just wanted to comment on this thread to say that I made one of these (the pull top pre-filter) and it works awesome. I use a 4 liter platy tank so that I can collect all my water I want to use ...

To David Vo, I didn’t realize you wanted all the nitty gritty details. Ok, let me just lay out a typical day then. Usually I start off the morning hike with water that was gathered and treated ...

To David Vo (and whoever else cares) I’ll lay out my normal water gathering regimen. I normally hike over here on the East coast, so water is readily available in most places and is usually flow...

I haven't used any of the previous models, only the opti. I love it. Went to it from using filters and chemicals. I don't have enough field experience with it to comment on issues (I'...

I’ve been using this headlamp (both the original and newer version) for years. The reviewers above pretty much covered everything with this headlamp, so I am not going to repeat all that. It’s light...

I have used this tent many nights over the last few years. It has been my main inclement weather/winter tent, so it typically sees the worst weather I go out in. Well, let’s get right into this. ...
