My Locale Rocky Mountains
About Me My favorite location for backpacking is the Black Ridge Wilderness near Grand Junction - no trails, no people, lots of arches and alcoves. I enjoy hiking, canyoneering, snowshoeing, and rock climbing. I have a passion for natural arches, especially documenting significant ones on the Colorado Plateau. I go on short solo backpacking trips at least once a month.

Jacob has a spreadsheet listed earlier on this topic. It's useful. I decided to focus on Minolta lenses. The focus peaking feature of the Nex is very nice for using these lenses. There ar...

HDR In-Camera Options
I have a Sony Nex 5N and an A77 SLT. Both of these cameras support HDR in the camera. I've been quite pleased with the results even when hand-holding the cameras. Sometimes the photos look a...

Jacob, When you talk about lens weight, you don't seem to include the adapter for the Nex. I know the adapter I have for the MC Rokkor lenses is quite heavy. Are there really lenses that ar...

Lightweight Backpacking and Camping by Ryan Jordan et al.
I've read a lot of backpacking books and go on backpacking trips each month. A lightweight pack is a better way. I have a scientific background (Ph.D. organic chemist) so the viewpoint and writing st...

NOLS Wilderness Guide by Mark Harvey
It covers a lot of different topics. Unlike other books written by "traditional" backpackers, such as O'Bannon's Backpackin' Book, I didn't feel like I skimmed some good ideas from a knowledgeable and...

Allen & Mike's Really Cool Backpackin' Book 2001
Reading this book reminds me that it’s possible to learn from all types of backpackers. The book is well written and illustrated. The illustrations have ideas that are not always in the text. All...

The Backpacker's Field Manual by Rick Curtis
This book covers a broad range of topics and it is quite up-to-date. The author recommends that you carry it on all your backpacking trips. It's a "field manual", according to the author. At 417 grams...

The Ultralight Backpacker by Ryel Kestenbaum
This book has some useful information and guidance so I decided to give it two stars. It isn't the worst book I've seen on backpacking but it isn't very good. The author recommends that you cut tag...

Lighten Up! by Don Ladigin
I've read several books on backpacking. This book is the best, without a doubt. I'll agree with Mark that it isn't a complete guide. Sure, you can read extensively on the backpackinglight.com web sit...

Pentax Optio s5z
