My Locale PNW
About Me I've been backpacking since the early 70's . For the past 16 years it's been day hiking as our daughter grew up , with camping in the Cascades every summer. Now we are ready to take her deeper in , and I'm re-equipping us for lighter travel. Photography is a major hobby, as well as Chinese gardens and travel in China.

Heinlein in context
By the time Heinlein was writing Stranger and basically trying to get laid with his Lazarus Long persona SF had shifted so much that he was a dinosaur. My first free book from the Science Fiction B...

Trash
Burning trash looks good . And here in the NW use of forest slash is being proposed for conversion of coal plants. All of it is very controversial. In China electric Bikes are displacing convention...

More reviews
David Pogue at the NYT reviewed a few waterproof cameras/ camcorders today. They may more relevant because they are shockproof as well. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/22/technology/personaltech/2...

Panoramas
You can use things like the Coolpix 4500 to compensate for exposure on panoramas and use it's panning mode to line things up , but having looked into this over some time in the Coolpix line wit...

Interesting confluence
I was surprised that backpacking and science fiction crossed the streams here, but then again both seem to be directed toward getting Out There. Here is a book review from the NYT on recent takes o...

Low/high art
This thread is too good to end . Surely Pitch Black is a very good nighthike movie. And Johnny Mnemonic must have made William Gibson think he was about to be directed by Lynch in Blue Velvet 2 vs....
