My Locale SF Bay Area
About Me Started backpacking in the late 1990s. I love the mountains. I'm into peak bagging (up to class 3; no ropes involved), exploring new areas, snowshoeing. I also do lots of day hikes in the bay area.

I've been lightweight from the start (probably my lightest pack was my first time out, having just read Ray Jardine's PCT Hiking Guide).

Due to heart problems, I've slowed down a bit in recent years. But that makes efficiency an even more important criterium when choosing my gear.

Re: salomon boots
I've never worn them, actually. I spotted them at the REI sale and couldn't pass up the bargain. My mountaineering expeditions have been substantially curtailed. I saw your request and th...

salomon boots
I can't say about how those boots might fit compared to the Salomon trail runners. They are a completely different animal, I would think. The sizing doesn't seem too large. I wear 10.5 ...

Re: Kaiser Wilderness (Western Sierra) Conditions
I was in the Sierra NF twice in the last month. Snow level (on forest service roads) was around 6500' on Jun 11/12, 7200' on Jun 25/26. On trails at slightly higher elevations, snow covera...

Re: wtb down parka, mld solomid, misc mountaineering gear
I have a very lightly used pair of Salomon climbing boots. But size 11.5; EU size 46. I think they are men's version of this boot: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/i/72190,,_Salomon-SM-Exper...

is the Expedition the large Bearikade? I've got one of those that I can't envision ever using. Send me a PM if you think you might be interested. Bill

Re: Glen Aulin (Yosemite) Alternative
I was in Sierra NF last weekend. Beasore Rd above Bass Lk was solid snow a bit above 6500'. I drove the FS road up to Fresno Dome until I reached solid snow about that same point. Hiked 4 mile...

I just upgraded from the Pany ZS-6 to a Sony NEX-5. Super image quality and interesting options with that camera. Anyway, I saw this article about adapting a water bottle holder to carry the NEX...

Re: Yosemite/Kings Canyon Permits
For Yosemite (Matterhorn Pk, which I'm guessing is Twin Lakes TH), closest is just south of Bridgeport. For Mammoth Lakes, you can stop in Lee Vining or Mammoth Lakes. These are separate jurisd...

Re: Re: Re: WTB: Vasque Velocity, Size 11 Men's
I've just been wearing the older Velocity. I looked at my remaining unworn pair and they don't look like any of Vasque's current trail runners. The only identification is a model numb...

Nalgene Cantene '48 oz.' (widemouth)
I had two of these, 48oz that I used to carry additional water in my daypack for long hikes or peak-bagging. And a 96oz for use in camp (never carried this one full). Loved the weight and collap...
