My Locale Midwest
About Me I am in my late-40's and really got interested in backpacking about 10 years ago as a way to have some concentrated time with my boys, now all finishing up high school or in college. I try to get out a few times a year, including a bi-annual trip to Colorado for some of the big stuff. Otherwise I am stuck in the very boring midwest where everything exciting is a good day's drive away.

Stake it out
My experience with the BA UL Fly Creek 3 has been excellent. A lot of the time you see the tent in pictures with the guy lines still tied up, just like it came right of the box. This is a tent, l...

A hammock
My biggest luxury is my Nano 7 hammock with a bug sock. It is hugely satisfying to take a break every three hours or so and hang, giving my feet and back a break. And occasionally take a nap. Pu...

TS in grey
I have the TS in yellow but would go with grey if I were to do it again. The yellow is awesome in the morning but the bugs are absolutely drawn to the color and you'll be sharing your space wi...

soft sided Nalgenes as well
I use the Steripen with the wide mouth soft-side Nalgene's and its a good system. A bit heavier than the Platy's but need the wider bottle opening for the Steripen. By the way, since you&...

A hammock
Very interesting to read what others added back to their kits for safety or comfort reasons. I got down to a 9.5 lb base last year and have since settled on a 12-13 lb base that makes me quite con...

hammock bug net
Dave, I use Papa Smurf's tulle bug sock for my Nano 7 hammock setup and love it. You need to treat it very gently but only 2.75 oz.
