My Locale Oregon and Washington
About Me I started hiking about 45 years ago. My first backpack was 40 years ago. I currently try to do one backpack trip of 5 nights every month (which can be tricky in the winter) 20 to 50 miles. Mostly I stay around Mount Hood, Columbia Gorge, Mount Adams, Goat Rocks, and the Olympic Peninsula. In recent years I have shifted to lightweight - my pack weight without food and water is about 15 lb (7 kg). I make a lot of my own gear - silnylon tarp-tent, bivy, synthetic bag, simple bag style pack. My sleeping pad is a Therm-a-Rest air mattress.

Re: The asym baffle
Some people put synthetic on the outside, so that the point where the temperature reaches freezing is in the synthetic, because water (ice) will accumulate there. This is only for real cold temper...

Re: Re: A new look at Kevlar textiles and fabric in terms of insulation, particularly for gloves and socks
seperate subject - when my wool socks get wet they're a lot more susceptible to wear. I can wear out some socks in one day. Maybe some are worse?

Re: A new look at Kevlar textiles and fabric in terms of insulation, particularly for gloves and socks
I think the conductivity of air is what's important. The conductivity of the fiber material is not important, because most of the volume of insulation is air. More thinking of synthetic or ...

Good point, with MYOG seldomly does anything wear out before I get the itch to replace with some new thing.

Re: Re: Re: Re: A new look at Kevlar textiles and fabric in terms of insulation, particularly for gloves and socks
I've got insulation wet, weighed it, calculated percent of volume that's water (which is very small), calculated over-all conduction using conductivity of water and air - the higher conduct...
