About Me I have been backpacking on and off in the western US since college in the early 1970's. Summer 1970 a bunch of us spent a week in the Three Sisters Wilderness in Oregon barefoot with blankets, book bags, and no proper gear at all. Now I coordinate youth backpacking for our Camp Fire council, and enjoy taking the kids to the mountains. I hope to take up more long distance walking after retirement.

Re: Stoves, electronics & clothing rant
"What we need to see is PAN American products made in this hemisphere to strengthen our North and South American economies. Colombia (the country, not the clothing manufacturer) now makes a lo...

Re: Memberships are commissioned IIRC
I work part time at an REI, and no, memberships are not commissioned. Employee evaluations (and store evaluations) include meeting membership targets, but this is not a commission. And there is a...

tarp for Wonderland
We hiked WL in August 2009 with an ID 8 x 10 flat tarp (15 oz with stakes & lines) for the two of us, with down bags. 10 days, the latter 6 of them wet. No bivies. Tarp worked just fine.

Umbrella and tarp
Like this? Golden Lakes camp, Wonderland Trail, Mt. Rainier National Park, August 2009. Rained hard all afternoon and all night. We were holed up nice and dry. Umbrella could easily be moved ...

More tips
How the bag got "wet" can make a difference. If it was rain or spilled water or a brief dunking in the creek, chances are the down itself isn't all that soaked, because down abso...

I am, as noted above, a Ridgerest person, so I don't have personal experience with the Prolite pads. But there are several reviews up at rei.com. Plug in Item #780990 to the search field on r...

It's OK, really
Um, really, don't worry about it. Get the pad you like. Even if it's purple. How's that going to hurt you? I work part time at an REI in the camping department, and believe me, a ...

Late March
This year it is a little later than usual--later in March and into early April. I don't remember the exact dates; they are posted in the office at the REI I work at.

We have one of each--cat and flat
We have an ID Silwing and an ID 8 x 10. Got the Silwing first, big enough for 2, sets up easily, nice and taut. Later got the 8 x 10. Why? The Silwing doesn't snug all the way to the ground...

Thanks!
Thanks to all for your kind comments. We had a good time on this trip, despite our earlier trepidation about following a "route." We do need more practice at this sort of hiking, to fee...
