My Locale Western Washington
About Me I started backpacking again in 2008, after a long hiatus---I haven't been since I was a kid. Loving learning about a different way to hike---backpacking was no fun when I was a teen-ager, stuff was too heavy! Completed my dream of hiking the Wonderland Trail in 2010, now onto more hikes in the Cascades and Olympics.

the sneeze issue
I found that frequent and judicious employment of Kegel exercises really improved the sneeze issue for me. Beats carrying panty liners.

Well, sorta
Yes, it is an ethical question, as it must piss proprietors off along the trails when people just casually plug in. That sort of thing can get hikers banned from places--witness the Laundromat in...

Nero day charging gadgets
As a conceptual exercise, I was wondering--if you are not staying over in a town, renting a motel room, how do people go about charging their cell phones, MP3 players, etc? I have heard/read sever...

quilt for me
As a side sleeper and a toss-and-turner, bags never made sense for me. Always ended up with the hood over my face, my legs tangled up, would wake up and have to spend time getting it all straight a...

velcro attachment sucks
I'd love to use the Dirty Girl gaiters just for the funk factor, but I just could not get the Velcro patch to stay glued to my shoes. The Montbell gaiters have been fantastic. I thought the...

I use Ex Officio too, but would NOT count on them for stink control. I'd use merino, but the only ones I have seen so far do not come large enough--XL is not size 14-16! Here is a blog from...

limiting miles
It would make sense to build up to big miles in the beginning, especially if you haven't had a chance to put many miles on your feet right before setting off. Folks talk about having to do 20 ...

Dash rain fly
I'm a little dubious about the Dash's rain fly. It is not full coverage, which may fly in the Rockies, but in the PNW, I'd be concerned that things might leak. I have a Quarterdome T2...

love it
I have transitioned to hiking in a skirt--and I HATE skirts for every-day wear. However, the improved air circulation leads to greater comfort when used on long hikes, and in the PNW, where stuff ...

Montbell Outpace Parka
The Outpace Parka is a decent jacket, but it has some design details that could be better. It sheds rain really well. It is pretty light and packable. Its breathability seems to be fairly good, alth...
