My Locale San Francisco Bay Area
About Me I have been backpacking off and on since Boy Scouts at the end of the 1960s. Although at that time, it was called camping. We just had to walk 5 or 10 miles to the campsite. :))

I moved to lightweight to be able to keep up with my son when he joined Boy Scouts. Now I mostly aim for winter camping in Yosemite or the Tahoe-Donner area, spring and fall hikes in the Santa Cruz mountains, and summer trips to the Emigrant or Carson-Iceberg wilderness.

MH Direkt 2 4 season tent
The new Mountain Hardware 4 season tent at 2 lbs 8 oz l(25 sq feet) looks almost too light to be true for a 4 season tent. From descriptions on the web, it appears to be double walled. Compare t...

Pot question. Short wide, tall skinny
Are you cooking in the pot or just heating water? If the former, the short, wide pot works better for me. If just heating water, you are better off with the lightest pot you can afford. Tita...

My usual solo snow camping shelter is a MLD duo mid with bivy sack. But last year I started doing base camping so I started looking for an affordable, relatively lightweight 4 season tent. After exa...
