"An unguyed, unstaked "freestanding" tent is frequently called a box kite." An unguyed, unstaked "nonfreestanding" tent is frequently called a bivy.

I have cuben (0.74) stuff sacks and they are still completely waterproof and they get compressed, twisted, and stuffed in my pack. I have never used cuben for a shelter, however. Edit: damn...

Very little water in Zions as of last week. Highs of 85F at higher elevations and lows of 31F. Quite the swing.
