My Locale Southeast
About Me I've been backpacking for several years, and am not an ultralight guy...I'm probably teetering on the line between light weight and traditional. I normally carry 25 - 35 lbs (total weight including food and water). I typically go on 5 - 6 trips a year consisting of weekend trips with a longer (1 - 2 weeks) one mixed in there. I have been section hiking the AT since late '07, and am a quarter of the way through it. Other than the AT and local hikes I have also hiked in the Sierras and Southern Utah.

Re: Black bears, east & west
I don't know...maybe the East coast ones are more timid cause they are more heavily hunted? All I know is that I have hiked in the SE for several years now and never actually laid eyes on ...

Re: LIghtweight shelters on Mt Rogers.
Good info, thanks for the report. I hike up in that area from time to time, and I have a DR. I would never use it in those conditions though...that's what I have a Hilleberg Akto for. I cou...

Re: Help selecting a single wall shelter for 2
I have replied to two separate recent threads discussing these shelters, so check out those threads for some details on what I think about both shelters. I own a DR and a Squall (the original one)...

Re: Mt. Rogers
The primary trail going through Mt. Rogers NRA is the AT. There are also several short side and spur trails off of the AT that allow one to make some interesting loops. Mt. Rogers NRA itself is n...

Re: Free-standing
You make a good point about the insert that I forgot to mention. As you indicated, if excess condensation builds up on it the condensation will drip onto the floor of the tent as the insert is not...

Re: SMD Refuge (27oz) OR Tarp Tent Squall 2 (33oz)
I can't comment on SMD Refuge, but I do have experience with the Squall (both original and Squall 2). The Squall is a nice compromise between lightweight and space. I own an original Squall a...

Not many have replied and discussed the DR, and maybe you weren't looking for specific info on it due to info you have found elsewhere. Nonetheless, I have a DR and thought I would post a few ...

I’ve been using this headlamp (both the original and newer version) for years. The reviewers above pretty much covered everything with this headlamp, so I am not going to repeat all that. It’s light...

I have used this tent many nights over the last few years. It has been my main inclement weather/winter tent, so it typically sees the worst weather I go out in. Well, let’s get right into this. ...
