My Locale Midwest
About Me I am in my late-40's and really got interested in backpacking about 10 years ago as a way to have some concentrated time with my boys, now all finishing up high school or in college. I try to get out a few times a year, including a bi-annual trip to Colorado for some of the big stuff. Otherwise I am stuck in the very boring midwest where everything exciting is a good day's drive away.

I posted some questions here about 7 weeks ago on the same thing. I found myself on a ridge in the Smokies during a very windy night when the temperature dropped and had to put on every stitch of ...

I have both of those jackets and usually take the Nano. I also use a Patagonia Houdini windshirt and take a rain jacket. Put all three on and I can stay very warm through virtually anything, espe...

fluff
Be sure to fluff the down back to the middle before going to sleep. I failed to do that on a cold night and dearly paid the price for it. I was cold and miserable when I failed to realize all of ...

Not sure what you're willing to spend but I use the Trailstar and Oookworks Inner. Can use just the TS when bugs aren't an issue and of course the inner when they are. I tried to do netting...

Geargrams.com
Joe, might want to use the useful tool, www.geargrams.com. Easy to compile a entire inventory and then simply drag it into various kits.

Yeah!
Having gas when hiking with your son is the ultimate! We laugh trying to out-do each other--until one of us says, 'That wasn't a fart...' Hey, don't fight it, enjoy it!

Women's pad
+1 on Laura's comment. I use the women's size on the pads as I don't like the shorter pads that stop at my knees (or worse at my hips) but don't want the weight of the 72 and 77&...
