My Locale Boulder, CO
About Me I started backpacking as a teenager in southern appalachia. My summers in college were spent in mountain heaven, glacier national park. Since then, I've lived and played in the high sierras, the cascades, and now the colorado front range. Walking into the mountains for a few days with a light pack never seems to lose its charm. Also a snapper of many photos. Check out my instagram for short visual trip reports and such.

dwr down
I'm curious about the performance of DWR down too. I recently purchased a 30 degree wide enigma with 900 hyperdry to use over my katabatic sawatch in winter. My hope is that the moisture will b...

I've used a hexamid twin (tarp) as my only three season backpacking shelter for the last few years and its been great. At 6 oz and sufficient (but snug) room for two, its always felt like cheat...

Man, no shame at all in using what you have. I bet that omni shield works just as well as what a lot of people on these forums use. The one you described sounds like a pretty versatile system. ...

Keeping the ultralight angle in mind, I dont think goretex is worth it. Where it might be worth it is for the added durability, or better protection in sustained rainy climates. I've had my...

It packs small, but it lacks a stuff sack. I dont think it packs quite as small as the helium, but close.

marmot essence (2014)
I can vouch for the marmot essence. I've been very pleased with mine so far. I think its at least as breathable as the 3L event jacket I owned before it. Its also stretchy and fairly soft and c...

Sounds like your uniqlo is decently warm for the weight. You could consider just using that on warmer trips and investing in a nice light parka like a montbell mirage for a few oz mor & a lot m...

katabatic chisos long + 1oz overfill
Quilt sold. This is a long regular size. The baffles feel lofty & nicely overstuffed. More like a 30 degree bag in my experience. New, this would cost about $450. Have this 3 year old, well t...

I'm very impressed with this pack. I tried out a few packs for a planned AT thru hike (didn't pan out yet), and this was far and a away my favorite. With the stay and sitpad, the pack conforms...
