About Me Having been a backpacker off and on since the early 90's when a trip to Philmont infected me w/ the bug, I have transitioned over to a lighter kit. My first encounter with UL backpacking was some CDT thru-hikers I met in New Mexico. I went home and combed the web, found BPL, and the rest is history. Right now, I'm between jobs, working at a local running shop and have been doing a little freelance writing, hoping to find a voice for a writing career perhaps. Previously, I have obtained a meteorology degree and master's degree in secondary educ.

Welcome to the fray Jeremy. I'll warn you, making your own gear is habit forming. If you notice urges to deconstruct gear that you've picked up at the store or find yourself in the aisle po...

re: humans & animals
Bruce, your experience is a familiar one. I have more apprehension towards human sounds than anything. If I hear leaves in the woods, I'm not even worried about animals. However, I'm listen...

I've been in the "planning to bike the Katy" camp for years now. I just never got my bike equipment up to the level I wanted to trek with. I was sitting around mulling over hikes in t...

re: Water, etc.
Thanks for all the kind words. I really learned a lot on this hike. We can talk ourselves blue on the forums, but getting out there is the best way to learn. Short hikes close to home really captur...
