About Me I have been backpacking on and off in the western US since college in the early 1970's. Summer 1970 a bunch of us spent a week in the Three Sisters Wilderness in Oregon barefoot with blankets, book bags, and no proper gear at all. Now I coordinate youth backpacking for our Camp Fire council, and enjoy taking the kids to the mountains. I hope to take up more long distance walking after retirement.

From somewhere (now I don't remember exactly, probably a link posted by someone on these boards?) I downloaded a pdf of Camping and Woodcraft by Horace Kephart, originally 1917, this appears to...

A toughie
I have hesitated to weigh in on this one. The teacher's expectations, all desirable, are hard to meet in Texas in the summer. It is pretty much hot, dry (especially this year), and muggy. Fo...

I am thinking about that. I also want to use the Pecan Cranberry Ranch Chicken Salad (in wraps) for one of the Pine Spring dinners, but I didn't have the Ranch packets to make it with for our ...

Sounds great, I am going to test this on Robert for our JMT hike later this summer. >>If you brought the milk powder, mix it with water and then pour the milk over the muesli. One sugg...

test results
Night before last we had a pre-trip meeting, and I had samples of a number of ideas prepared for folks to try. The concept of no-cook meals for 4 days (2 at Pine Spring and 2 on the trail) went ov...

Re: Mariposa Plus
Scott, I am leaning towards using the MP on this trip, since you and some others have found it practical to do so. You are right, the volume seems to work out. I made a model Bearikade Expedi...

Re: Re: tarps
Oh, my. The Z-packs tarps do look nice. Will have to think hard about the price though. Or I could gut up and carry the extra half pound the ID tarp weighs and send the money to an environmental...

10 lbs of kitty litter is WAY too much for the JMT. I'd take only about 5 lbs. ; ) Uh-oh. Back to the drawing board....

P. S. Still interested in information on lighter 8 x 10 flat tarps. Found Etowah (13 oz.), Bear Paw (15 oz.), Oware (13.5 oz.), Campmor (13 oz.), all not including stakes and lines. My ID 8 x 10 ...
