About Me I'm getting back into backpacking after several years' hiatus. All my gear was circa 1979, so I've been gradually replacing it with lightweight new equipment. I will be retiring in 4 more years and then plan to do all the trails I've dreamed of doing. I also love xc-skiing and mt. biking. I plan to move to Oregon for retirement. Besides the outdoors, I love early and classical music;I play Baroque recorder and harpsichord. I'm a bookworm, I enjoy writing and quiet get-togethers with close friends.

Classical Music Lovin' Ultralighters
Well, let's see: we have the punk rock lovin' ultralighters and the heavy metal lovin' ultralighters, so I thought I'd throw my two cents in and admit that I'm a classical music...

To my fellow lady backpackers: I'm always looking for good books about wilderness trips done by and written by women - especially solo trips (since I always go solo; I don't have any friend...

Re: Offroading and Backpacking
I concede the necessity of a 4-wheel-drive vehicle to get to trailheads, especially in places like Utah and Nevada. However, what I don't like about offroading are the yahoos who just want to u...

Re: Saddened by the Wildfires
I read that there are investigations starting to determine if some of the fires were started by arsonists. It's heartbreaking enough when these fires are caused by lightning, but the thought of...

Leigh - I hope your friends are safe and that they don't suffer any losses (or, at least, not too many). I've heard there are fires in Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico (that might be out now) - ...

Re: Netting?
Steven - Ah yes, the good ol' Eureka Timberline, right? A classic. I have fond memories of a lot of camping trips with that tent. It stood up to some wicked thunderstorms, too. Really, not a ba...
