My Locale Desert Southwest, USA
About Me Backpacking Light online magazine Editor-in-chief. I live and do a lot of my backpacking in the desert, but I LOVE the mountains of the west! I schedule mountain trips as often as I can to get my thin air "fix." Currently, I'm enjoying experimenting with heavier options like hammocking and more complex cooking. I keep my base weight from creeping up too far by starting from a SuperUltraLight gear list and making limited heavier substitutions.

RE: Weight muffin cup
Darn! 5" diameter won't fit inside my SnowPeak 600 (about 3.5" diameter) or even my FireLite 1100 (about 4.5" D). I really need a muffin baking cup with no ridges. Are they out ...

Etan question #1
Etan, Look at the third picture below the one you refer to in question 1. It's the Forty Below Light Energy TR Overboot in the photo.

silcone muffin cups
Double as hot pads - great idea! I didn't know they came ruffle-less - I'll be on the lookout for some. Cool!

silcone muffin cups
I just heard about these from Mike C! Is there any problem cleaning them in the field so they can be reused on another night? (Wondering about the folds.)

Thickness of batter
I use a thicker batter, guessing that the steam will add moisture.

Cooking time depends on the amount of batter
Try a muffin baking cup worth of batter. That should be done in about 6 minutes - or one esbit tab worth. The snow peak bowl holds a lot of batter. Probably 3 muffin cups worth like the Betty Crock...

Betty Crocker Warm Delights - mini
The Betty Crocker Warm Delights mini bowl fits into a FireLite SUL-1100 pot perfectly. It holds about 3 muffin cups worth of batter. I steamed some Cache Lake latkes and it worked out great. I also...

Komperdell Featherlights
Look for the Komperdell Featherlights at STP as well. One piece, carbon poles that are very stiff and light!

Coughlan's LED Clip-on Headlight
The Coughlan’s LED Clip-on Headlight is light weight, inexpensive and bright enough for around camp chores. The red filter is a nice feature to save night vision. I gave it a 3 of 5 because it was fru...
