Re: Exped Synmat UL 7 question
I'm fine down to the mid-twenties F. Colder than that and I add a piece of 3/8" foam which also provides insurance if the UL7 springs a leak. Another thumbs up for the pump bag.

Re: Older Golite Shelters require seam seamling?
Hi Brad, I've been using a 2009 SL2 as my primary shelter since November of 09. Since then, the shelter has seen some pretty intense storms. So far, so good. No leaks.

Sounds like Roger isn't the only one impressed with the FMS-300.

Never Summer Wilderness Loop
Thanks, Tim. Nice moose shot. The only thing I got on the Never Summer trip was an out-of-focus photo of the moose running away from me on the third morning. But this guy agreed to pose for me th...

Never Summer Wilderness Loop
In the muffled silence, I creep toward the clearing. My heart jumps, then settles. No moose. Just a couple of does grazing at the far end of the meadow. Back on the trail, I ascend in the...

Re: ergo or straight handled trekking poles
For what it's worth, Dennis, I've been using Pacerpoles for years to pitch my shelters without any problem. They are pretty tough. I pitch with handles down and haven't had any issues...

Thanks for all the positive comments, guys. Great story, Randy, and useful information about the parking. Maybe that's why I was the only backpacker on the bus. Doh! Yuri, very insightfu...

It is kind of fun when that happens, isn't it, Tim. There was one time when I was in your neck of the woods, I think it was near Eccles Pass, when I could hear a large animal crashing around j...

Re: Excellent write up
Thanks, Yuri. That's a great question, and I'm still mulling it over. It was a lot of fun meeting my fellow hikers, but there were times when I wanted to just be alone out there.

Re: Re: How many nights?
HK, yeah, 11 hrs. is a long drive. On the other hand, you'll probably arrive after 5 pm, meaning that you can skip the bus and drive right to Maroon Lake. Crater Lake is only 1.8 miles from t...

Montbell U.L.AlpineBurrow Bag #3 Long
Nice review, Mitchell. After our discussion here about this bag back in April, I had a serious hankering after this bag. I really had no need of another bag and managed to resist until the Memorial ...

Mine fit well. Size 10 slips right over a thin pair of wool socks and my size 9.5 feet. They are comfortable inside my trail runners and do what they claim to do--keep my feet warm and dry in wet, col...

This is the book I recommend to friends and folks I meet on the trail who are interested in going lighter. It's fun, unpretentious, and lays out the basic ideas in ways that are easy to understand. Do...
