My Locale Southern California
About Me I live in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. I can get to a lot of nice hiking areas right from my street or travel for 15 minutes to higher elevations in the Angeles National Forrest. I started packing again with my sons in their Boy Scout troop. I was definitely not light that first trip 6 years ago and have been reducing my pack weight ever since. I mainly pack a few times a year in the Eastern and Western Sierras.

Where are the lightweight backpackers? Not on the JMT...
Is this what this thread is about. I did not say a word to him about his pack. Looked like he was having, huff, a, huff, lot, huff, fun, huff. He and his wife were up there with two of their kids. ...

"That was a great lesson in looking both up and down when selecting a site." Always need to look for those "widowmakers".

How fast to you hike
In the Sierra, with so much elevation gain and loss, I just figure 2 miles per hour which includes a stop for lunch and a swim, etc. If I am alone, I can bump that up a bit, but not much. When we d...

Re: 2-Person Shelters TSW - Looking for feedback for my next in-depth article!
I agree with Henry. Yes, weight is a great concern, but cutting off some of the more popular lightweight shelters by just a few ounces may leave out a couple of nice shelters.

Question for Gossamer Gear 2012 Pack Owners
Just got back from a 65 mile trip in the Sierra. First time out for me with a 2012 Gorilla. My go to pack for the last few years has been a Mariposa Plus. This is the second trip on this pack as my...

Lighter1
Because of this thread I went to the Lighter1 website. It is still confusing as it shows a bear proof canister at 1 lb. 5 oz. and then the lid at 6 oz. and the handle at 1 oz. They really can't...

MSR MIOX
We used a MSR Miox on a trip with 9 people (Scouts). We got very spotty results and ended up playing with the unit more than we wanted. It seemed like the perfect solution but was not worth the wait. ...
