My Locale Western Washington
About Me I started backpacking again in 2008, after a long hiatus---I haven't been since I was a kid. Loving learning about a different way to hike---backpacking was no fun when I was a teen-ager, stuff was too heavy! Completed my dream of hiking the Wonderland Trail in 2010, now onto more hikes in the Cascades and Olympics.

Leopard print tights
That's right, Doug, leopard print running tights. I ditched the zip-off pants after a misty backpack trip in Mt. Rainier park left me damp for days. I find the tights breathe better. Leopard be...

zpacks gaiters
On my size 10.5 Altra Lone Peaks, the Zpacks gaiters are long enough in the toe that I had to sew a toe loop on my shoes. Totally covers the laces, though.

I'm pretty sure that Will Rietveld had an article several years ago on modifying the white onesie to make rain gear.

Bombproof and 6 ounces are not likely to exist together. Is your rain shell going to live in your pack, and only rarely get taken out? Then the 6 ounces may be more important. Will you be hiking f...

Go Helium
I was fed up with the Precip. They wet out quickly, and the ones I had delaminated too. The Essence has been better, but OR's customer service is way better. I haven't used the Helium but i...

Grungy nails do not go well with food prep.

thanks, Mercedes!
I'm glad to know I'm not the only medical geek to carry a nail brush! The scrub brushes we use at my clinic are pretty light. I couldn't resist stealing one for my hiking kit.

yes to the polycryo
I absolutely would bring a polycryo ground sheet for the Hexamid. Hadn't thought about hammocks but yes, there should be sites. Is it kosher to bring a couple of packs I'd like to sell? ...

The pea gravel is about 4 inches deep, with dirt underneath it. I think you could drive stakes into the dirt, I doubt it is compacted, but you would need to have long stakes. The pea gravel is no...

Montbell Outpace Parka
The Outpace Parka is a decent jacket, but it has some design details that could be better. It sheds rain really well. It is pretty light and packable. Its breathability seems to be fairly good, alth...
