My Locale Southeast
About Me I've been backpacking for several years, and am not an ultralight guy...I'm probably teetering on the line between light weight and traditional. I normally carry 25 - 35 lbs (total weight including food and water). I typically go on 5 - 6 trips a year consisting of weekend trips with a longer (1 - 2 weeks) one mixed in there. I have been section hiking the AT since late '07, and am a quarter of the way through it. Other than the AT and local hikes I have also hiked in the Sierras and Southern Utah.

Snow Peak Giga
I have both and prefer the Giga. The main reason is what Roger mentioned in that the flame gets focused into a small area with the PR. Not an issue for boiling water, but if you want to simmer an...

No Guylines?
Hmm...something sounds weird there. The loops on the tent canopy at the 4 corners should have short pieces of triptease on them...at least that's how mine came. Those are the guy lines, and o...

Silicone Sealant
I have painted stripes across the floor of one tent (Tarptent Double Rainbow), and performed the "Jim Wood" (jwbasecamp.com) sil-nylon treatment on another (Tarptent Squall). Both method...

I hesistate to recommend a particular temperature rated bag just because everyone sleeps different. I for example sleep really cold. At any rate, I would go with the higher rated bag (the Versali...

Oops...I "ranted" in the wrong thread
Crap, I didn't see this thread and posted my seam sealing rant under the Tarptent vs MSR thread...sorry about that. Anyway, I think Brad summed it up really good. I have always expected to ha...

Seam Sealing
I stayed out of the seam sealing debate on WB, but now it's popped up here so I gotta jump in and have a little fun. What's the big deal with seam sealing? I seam sealed a Double Rainbo...

Re: Which alcohol stove?
I'm partial to the penny stove, but then I've only made cat and penny stoves. The penny stove is fairly easy to make as it takes advantage of the unique structure of a Heineken can. I mad...

I was very intrigued by these shoes, so I bought some. I cannot give you any input based on field experience yet, but I can give you some general info. First off, I am not sure if you are tal...

Re: caribou mf.
I also have a Caribou, and I love it. For the OP I am 6'5", but fluctuate between 185 and 200 lbs. My bag is a long and weighs 23.95 oz, so that 21 oz weight you quoted is probably for t...

I hike primarily in the SE, and am currently section hiking the AT. So I am quite familiar with the green tunnel. I also did a trip to the Sierras last year where I was on the PCT for a short str...

I’ve been using this headlamp (both the original and newer version) for years. The reviewers above pretty much covered everything with this headlamp, so I am not going to repeat all that. It’s light...

I have used this tent many nights over the last few years. It has been my main inclement weather/winter tent, so it typically sees the worst weather I go out in. Well, let’s get right into this. ...
