Re: Transitioning to "SomewhatLight"; Backpack recommendations for wife and me?
A few suggestions: For knee problems, consider knee braces. My wife has had knee problems for a while and just got a pair. She loves them. There are lots of different types of braces; some are desi...

Re: What are the best UL Treckking Poles?
If you get carbon fiber poles, then don't ever use them to whack bushes. In other words, don't ever think they can work as a machete, even for weeds or soft plants like nettles. I made the ...

Re: Two new UL synth puffies
Those look like good jackets. It's too bad that BPL/Oware stopped making their puffy hoody (http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/cocoon_ul_60_hoody.html#.Ugeu4aycx8E). I'...

Re: "Medium Light"
Ever notice that anyone going slower than you is an idiot, but anyone going faster is a maniac? George Carlin I've hesitated to call myself an "ultralight" backpacker because so...

Re: Re: another call out for lightweight gaiters to keep out dust
Apparently there are at least a couple of trail running shoes that have integrated gaiters. These are a lot like the ones you see on cross country boots, in that they cover the entire shoe. I have ...

Re: another call out for lightweight gaiters to keep out dust
I've had the same problem as Rowan, although not as often. With really long hikes late in the year (when there is more dust) I've had dust get into my feet and cause blisters. This was on d...

Re: Re: Mont-bell UL SS #3
The naming on the bags is pretty confusing. I have an U. L. Super Spiral Down Hugger #3. This means it has high grade down (U. L. = 800) spiral cut as well as the stretchy thread. I think it works ...

Re: Tried it.
From what I can gather, it was Platypus that changed their threads. But I'm not sure about that, and it may actually depend on the type of Platypus (not just the year). Sawyer bags and filters ...

Re: Unfortunate Sawyer Squeeze Update
Silly question (because you probably tried this) but are the two Platypus bags exactly the same? Platypus changed their threads on their bags (I forget when). As a result, some Platypus bags work f...

Re: I'm in the same boat.
Like Brian, I've used windshirts/windpants for bug protection. The biggest advantage is weight. The Montbell gear I have is fairly breathable. But unfortunately, wind clothes vary year to year....

Gossamer Gear
Another GG review, another five out of five. This time, I broke a pole section (the lower part, or tip). It was my fault (I stepped on it) and not the fault of the pole. A call to customer support (I&...

Ultrapod Mini
I am very happy with my Ultrapod Mini. It does what is supposed to do very well. You often have to be resourceful with it; but with a little imagination, you can take great pictures. For example, if y...

Pentax Optio WP
I very much like my Optio WPi (6 mp). I have found the waterproof feature to be of much greater value than I originally expected. For winter pictures, it is really handy to set up a picture and not wo...

Eureka Zues II Exo
I bought this tent a few years ago, before I knew about tarp tents. I have been happy with it, but it is a little smaller and heavier than a tarp tent. As a free standing tent, it is more round, which...
