My Locale Bridger Mountains
About Me I backback most frequently in the Rockies, and most often take three-day trips. Over the past fifteen years I've served as a Forest Service volunteer in Wyoming and Montana, doing trail maintenance. As I get older I'm always looking for ways to lighten my pack load but I'm far from ultralight. I especially like base camp trips, with day hikes from a fixed camp.

Cold lower back
With a 22-inch torso the back of my base layer rides up all the time. Best base layer shirts I've found with extra length come from Ibex. When it's cold I do wear a longer outer layer to ke...

From years of use I believe that using a downmat adds 10-15 F degrees to a sleeping bag. The only synthetic I've tried that's close is a Big Agnes Q Core, which I tested for BackpackGearTes...

Cooking trout
I agree that frying or the foil method produces a tastier fish. Foil maybe a bit better for keeping the fish moist inside but as Ike says it's a mess to pack out the fishy foil. And a bear attr...

Brava, Amy!
Thanks for a terrific report and the photos, foliage photos especially. I grew up in the Northeast and still find the New England fall one of the world's wonders. Richard

For sleeping I wear a BPL merino hoody and, if it's cold enough, a hat. Usually that hat is an old cashmere watch cap (reviewed on BackpackGearTest.org) but below 0 F I may use a Nunatak Down B...

Simple answer of who's to blame. In alphabetical order, the Democrats and the Republicans. I repeat my earlier remark - I wish there were some way to throw them all out.
