About Me I have been backpacking on and off in the western US since college in the early 1970's. Summer 1970 a bunch of us spent a week in the Three Sisters Wilderness in Oregon barefoot with blankets, book bags, and no proper gear at all. Now I coordinate youth backpacking for our Camp Fire council, and enjoy taking the kids to the mountains. I hope to take up more long distance walking after retirement.

Post-trip evaluation of gear list
We completed nearly half of the JMT and then had to give it up because of an injury. But I want to post a review here of how my gear list worked out. Pack: I took the Mariposa Plus, and it w...

Followup report, going stoveless
Hello, All, After your very helpful assistance with no-cook ideas, we picked out some things we liked in testing, made our shopping list, and turned it over to a couple of the kids for shopping....

not wet
If the mug handles are too hot to touch then you don't want the bandanna to be wet. Wet material will transmit the heat to your hand. This is from kitchen experience, not outdoor--wet pothold...

overhead pack flip
My daughter used to do that with her pack on Camp Fire trips when she was in high school. We were carrying ~40 lb packs total weight (pre LW days). And she weighed 90-100. The Trip Leader told h...

A toughie
I have hesitated to weigh in on this one. The teacher's expectations, all desirable, are hard to meet in Texas in the summer. It is pretty much hot, dry (especially this year), and muggy. Fo...
