My Locale Central Texas
About Me I have been backpacking on and off in the western US since college in the early 1970's. Summer 1970 a bunch of us spent a week in the Three Sisters Wilderness in Oregon barefoot with blankets, book bags, and no proper gear at all. Now I coordinate youth backpacking for our Camp Fire council, and enjoy taking the kids to the mountains. I hope to take up more long distance walking after retirement.

Another disadvantage of hanging your pack
When we hiked the Wonderland Trail (2009), where the park requires the use of permanent hang poles at the designated camps, I used my pack (ULA Catalyst on that trip) as our hang bag. Wet weather ...

User error, tarps vs. tents
The previous comment about tarp setup and user error, in the context of whether a tent might be preferable, got my attention. And brought back this memory. It was our first backpacking trip to Gu...

"she is a girl and loves to shop :-)" Um, and all you *boys* on BPL don't love to shop? :P P. S. It doesn't solve the problem of picking out the pack in person, but if you w...

When I am out on short local trips without my poles, with my Gatewood Cape for a shelter, I just rummage around camp for a suitable stick. Carry weight=0. But we are not above treeline here.

Rabbit Proof Fence
Three girls escape across 1,200 miles of Australia, from forced training schools, to get home. True story from the 1930's. I think about it when the going gets tough....

Gossamer Gear
Last time I was at Gossamer Gear (they are local for us) they showed me a child's pack they were developing. I think it might have been a downsized Mariposa or similar. There isn't a spec...
