My Locale California
About Me I live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my wife and two children. I have hiked and backpacked throughout the state and beyond. I'm always looking to lighten my pack and lengthen the days and mileage of my trips. Favorite trips I've taken include thru-hikes of the John Muir Trail, High Sierra Trail, and Tahoe Rim Trail.

Re: I don't like hiking.
Dave: I hope I'm not partially responsible for your lack of enthusiasm for hiking. I know I planned a fairly demanding trip in the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne. You would have liked the Dead...

Re: Tahoe Rim Trail - Bear Boxes?
I don't remember any bear box at Brockway or anywhere else on the TRT. We cached water at Brockway last year, but stashed it in the bushes.

Backpacking and me
Backpacking has served as a focus, a kind of organizing principle in my life, and has become more so each year. A little history first. I grew up as an experienced camper, but not backpacker. ...

Re: Re: Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne
Tony: Night time temps in Pate Valley (between 4-5,000 ft) were "warm." I was too hot in the quilt. Second night they were "comfortable" at 7800 ft. Third night they were clo...

Re: Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne
A little bit on day 3 and 4. After Dave turned back, Cameron, Jay and I pushed on toward Tuolumne Peak. The snow started getting thick, and the trail hard to find, but we found the half-snow cove...

Thanks for posting this report. This is a trip I wanted to do when I learned it existed about a year ago. I used to live in SoCal and always enjoyed Catalina Island, including camping there, whic...

I have taken the FS Exodus on 2 trips this summer with very different circumstances. Both left me very happy with the FS. First, in July, I hiked 130 miles along the PCT in the Sierra. For this t...
