My Locale Colorado
About Me My primary pursuits are mountaineering (hiking with the goal of a summit) but I am beginning to re-kindle my love of Backpacking. In particular I have become a big fan of the Ultralight approach and love this website. I seem to be in a perpetual state of shelter/sleep system evaluation. My current setup for shelter is a GG SpinnTwinn with YMG Bug Bivy 1.0 (summer) or Katabatic Bristlecone Bivy(colder). Sleep system is Katabatic Chisos 40 degree quilt with Neoair short.

Re: el tarpo
I have never understood an A frame pitch on something as small as a Poncho Tarp. Same issues as other front entrance shelters. Getting in/out involves climbing over your gear/bag. Am I missing s...

Re: Learning to poncho (a recent convert)
I am a recent convert myself and purchased the Golite Poncho Tarp last year. "Fortunately" I was able to experience some bad weather on a brief overnight trip to the Buffalo Peak Wildern...

2011 Jam
I for one am quite content with the 2011 Jam. I picked it up for $75 which was a steal for a modest introduction into Frameless packs. It is perfectly comfortable carrying < 20 lbs that I carr...

Re: Re: Backcountry Boiler Mk II available!
I got my BC Boiler last week. Just wondering if you couldn't also burn an Esbit solid fuel tablet in the BC Boiler. I have never used them but wondering why they don't come up more in con...

Re: Quilts: Katabatic vs Enlightened
I have a Katabatic Chisos quilt and have been extraordinarily happy with it. Probably the most satisfied I have ever been with any gear purchase. The reasons for my satisfaction are 1] The qua...

Re: Katabatic
Katabatic Gear is a cottage manufacturer north of Denver. They don't have a shop that you could visit that I am aware of.

Esbit Tab with BC Boiler II
Curious if any Backcountry Boiler users have used an Esbit tab with it as a fuel source? I would think it would work just fine and the design of the BC Boiler would seem to get the most out of the...

Katabatic Gear Bristlecone (Regular Length, Wide Width)
I have had the Bristlecone Bivy for a year and really appreciate the side zipper for ease of entry/exit. The mesh is just right for breathability and views. The stake out loops are nice when you wan...
