My Locale Hampton Roads, Virginia
About Me I am a 60 year old Ph.D research physicist. With the kids gone we can occasionally afford to fly off to other parts of the country for backpacking and kayaking trips. I dream of going to Nepal, the Alps, and New Zealand, or back to Alaska.

I make a lot of my own UL equipment: pyramid tent, tarps, net tents, quilts, wind shirts and pants, jackets, kayaking gear, etc.

UL kayak camping is great, you get a real advantage over traditional paddlers who take everything, including the kitchen sink.

RE: A delicate issue
Another suggestion if Sportslick does not work. I wear tight fitting lycra boxers with longish legs, not loose and airy ones. They cling and all rubbing happens between fabric, not fabric and ski...

A very minor quibble concerning an otherwise very nice article. In the article there is a mild confusion between the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and the role of entropy. Schroeding...

RE: Recommend a large tarp
Why not get a big blue poly tarp from the hardware store. Very cheap, works great, but heavy.

RE: Seaming synthetics in a quilt
I used some heavy carpet thread, if I recall. Just something lying around in the bottom of my sewing box. Or possibly I doubled up some not so heavy thread. I don't think it matters much a...

RE: Seaming synthetics in a quilt
When I made my RayWay quilt the instructions were simple...just take some fairly tough thread, butt the two pieces together, and hand sew with big loops. Seems to work fine. My loops were about 1...

RE: How/When Did you learn about BPL
By chance (a fantastic stroke of luck!) I read Jardine's book Beyond Backpacking a few years ago and then began trolling the internet for more information on UL equipment. BPL showed up immedi...

RE: I Want A Vintage Backpack
How about a 1950-1960 design Boy Scout canvas rucksack, a rectangular canvas box with straps, no hip belt, no frame, nothing. Actually it's fairly lightweight, perhaps very early UL. It is ...

A number of years ago I pulled out my SD Dome tent right before a camping trip (original model, very light 4-season 3-person tent for 1980, under 7 lbs) and found that the shock cords in the poles had...
