My Locale Hampton Roads, Virginia
About Me I am a 61 year old PhD research physicist. With the kids gone we can occasionally afford to fly off to other parts of the country for backpacking and kayaking trips. I dream of going to Nepal, the Alps, and New Zealand, or back to Alaska.

I make a lot of my own UL equipment: pyramid tent, tarps, net tents, quilts, wind shirts and pants, jackets, kayaking gear, etc.

UL kayak camping is great, you get a real advantage over traditional paddlers who take everything, including the kitchen sink.

RE: umbrella mount
I have the same problem with a Golite umbrella. I stuff it down the sternum strap, resting on the top of my pack, but it falls off easily. Anyone have suggestions for mounting the Golite umbr...

Or use a trash compacter bag or polyethylene bag as a liner. Cheap and easy to replace.

Re: Water Purification Tablets
I've heard that mountain goats and bighorn sheep can carry Giardia all over the place, even to high elevations. But Jim seems to think not. I have no clue. Anyone care to comment?

Be careful to make a distinction between chlorine-based treatment (bleach) and chlorine dioxide (ClO2) treatment. The active agent in the former is chlorine, and the active agent in the latter i...

RE: Trail Beta
I climbed many years with close friends but haven't been part of a "climbing scene" since the early 1970's. Sounds like the word came into being just as I was dropping out. En...

I can't stand it any more...who is the moron who invented the term "trail beta" or "route beta"?' There are perfectly adequate words available (e.g. how about "i...

RE: lightweight large volume backpack
I regularly use a Golite Trek, which I think is still available (try eBay). It has lots of volume at a bit over 2 lbs. It is the big brother of the Golite Pinnacle, if I recall. I don't think...

RE: Chafe and moleskin
I eliminated thigh chafe by wearing lycra blend boxer underwear. The fabric clings to my legs and all rubbing is fabric-to-fabric, not fabric-to-skin or skin-to-skin. One downside is they are a...

A number of years ago I pulled out my SD Dome tent right before a camping trip (original model, very light 4-season 3-person tent for 1980, under 7 lbs) and found that the shock cords in the poles had...
