My Locale The Sierras
About Me I usually plan 2- 3 weekend trips in the Sierras a year and try to do one 'long' hike a year. I really like the Central part of the Sierras.

Consider shipping to Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico
I think it would simple to change 'shipped to the CONUS' to 'will ship with USPS only'. I have looked into shipping a sleeping bag to South America recently, and it is expensive an...

Rae Lakes from the East side
I've done this trip several times as fairly relaxed weekend trip! I usually will hike to Kearsarge Lakes or Charlotte Lake, do some fishing, then head to Rae Lakes for night two and more fishin...

John Muir Trail North-->South - July 2014
Best of luck your fast pack this summer! The JMT is a great trail to fast-pack. I will second the advice of not needing both VVR and MTR as resupply points. They're just not that far apart, and...

Searching for a new pack
Here's another vote for Zimmerbuilt packs. You can run some ideas by Chris, and I'm sure he would tell you if he could build one to your specs or defer you to someone who could. I also l...

Z Packs 20 degree
Bummer, this would have been a great score for me! I'm probably going to pick one of these up soon, but I would need the 6' length. I'm 5'10" as well, but want to be able to pu...

Daily Mileage Goals
It depends on the trip. I like picking one longer trip, usually the JMT, to push myself and see what I am capable of doing. I usually range anywhere from 22-32 miles a day on those trips. When work...

Bivy Condensation
Thanks Bill! For the 'normal' hiking I do in the Sierras, I think I will stick to not using a VBL. I can always drape my bag on a rock sometime during the day and let it dry out. I can'...

Bivy Condensation, VBL
These questions are posed to anyone who has used a vapor barrier liner in their sleeping bags. 1- do you wake up in a pool of sweat? After hiking anywhere from 22-30 miles a day, I find that my bod...

Alex, great info! Your situation was very similar to what I experienced this summer. I really don't want the hassle of setting up a tarp when I don't need to, so I will have to experiment m...

Zimmerbuilt Half-Dome, modified
I have owned many packs with some features I liked and dis-liked on each one, so I decided to give the custom order pack method a shot. After a less than pleasant experience with Kooka bay, I went int...
