My Locale The Tetons (via Idaho)
About Me I divide my time between doing cartoon drawings at my desk in Idaho, and sleeping outside in the mountains. A few years back Don Ladagan called me up and asked me to draw instructional cartoons for his excellent book LIGHTEN UP! He was quite an inspiration, and I embraced his simple teachings. From that point on I became a weirdo zealot for a lighter backpack. In 2005 I spearheaded the very successful lightweight program at the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Presently I’m working at Backpackinglight’s Wilderness Trekking School.

toilet paper can actually weigh ZERO!
What?!?!? Did Erik actually "advocate" taking toilet paper? Sorry, but I gotta chime in here. You'll be traveling in the mountains in a high snow year. This means you will have a s...

GPS unit weighs ZERO
The lightest GPS unit weighs ZERO ounces. Simply don't take one. Easy, and the lightest!

trail runners = GOOD!
If the pack weights are kept VERY low, trail runners are far better than boots. From anecdotal evidence, boots seem to cause MORE injuries.

weight of TYVEC can be zero.
Take the weight of the TYVEC to zero. Don't use anything, it's a tent with a floor right? Just take a few extra seconds to clean out any pointy sticks or rocks, you'll be fine.

ask around
I am unclear of your issue, but any seamstress in any town will be able to help. Ask at your local gear shop. They'll know someone with sewing skills.

Don't go over 1.6 PPPPD. Anything more and you'll have leftovers. Make sure your diet is mostly high calorie stuff. You'll be fine.

1.4 is a good starting point. I can't factor in the calories, it just makes me so confused. I stick only to the weight, easier for me. Temper that with your own needs. You eat a lot, and you...

I am chiming in and giving the DAS a low grade of 3. It is NOT a lightweight piece of gear! It's a porker, and should be refered to as such on the BPL site. 29 ounces? Thats 1 pound 13 ounce...
