About Me Having been a backpacker off and on since the early 90's when a trip to Philmont infected me w/ the bug, I have transitioned over to a lighter kit. My first encounter with UL backpacking was some CDT thru-hikers I met in New Mexico. I went home and combed the web, found BPL, and the rest is history. Right now, I'm between jobs, working at a local running shop and have been doing a little freelance writing, hoping to find a voice for a writing career perhaps. Previously, I have obtained a meteorology degree and master's degree in secondary educ.

re: quick clove hitch
For tying a quick clove hitch on my tarp and trekking poles, I just use the mnemonic: clove and clockwise start with "cl", so I make 2 clockwise turns in the line and run my trekking pole...

Thanks for sharing your experience Luke. It's a bit embarrassing to admit how much stuff we carried in our packs before lightening up. You bring up an important topic in your choice to bring ba...

re: evernew stove

re: foam
Those green army surplus store foam pads are rather stiff. Not sure how heavy they are though. I recently saw a lady w/ a whole stack of those things in her Jeep and almost stopped her to see where...

re: filling platypus
I recently discovered the difficulty of filling a platypus in a shallow stream. With a bit of work, I could get about 1.5L of the 2L I needed. So, I just took a ziploc I had in the food bag from m...

re: thomas
Thomas, for your first project it might make sense to use more basic fabrics that don't cost as much when you make mistakes. Plus, you'll find what size and any other tweaks you like. The k...

re: paul
Paul, don't feel shoehorned in to buying a 2+ or 3 person tent for this. My wife and I camp w/ our 2 40lb dogs in a Sierra Designs Electron 2P tent. I'm 6'5" and my wife is 5'2...

Scott, I'd always include a button down polyester, breathable tech shirt that could double for a nice shirt for dinner or hiking, etc. The same could be said about a khaki non-convertible hikin...
