My Locale Earth (mostly)
About Me Semi-retired from a govt type job working on the side. Goal here is more MPD in a UL, yet comfy style to experience scenic hikes without sweating buckets, but also crank out miles if needed for whatever. Mix hikes with travel too. Not into snowy sagas or recreating a French Foreign Legion forced desert march .. but never say never.

Gear list was for 3 days but made it almost as a "24-hour" adventure (like 25 hours) using the Z-pack

Color camping photo ... from Tsarist Russia
Here's a neat little find from a color photo (using an additive film technique of the primary colors) slideshow on Wired.com showing some tarps and Russians camping in 1909 .. not exactly LNT ...

... Stairways of San Francisco
Neat adventure similar to what is in Los Angeles. Hope this type of hiking (for both practice and on its own merit) spreads to other cities.

Wk+ long trips on-the-trail feet fixes
Out on a week-long trip (last week), a painful callous started developing despite having broken in my trail runners for about 60 miles. Thus I detoured off the trail into town (Mill Valley CA) at ...

(Intentional) holes in a jacket
This caught my eye in the apparel arena. In this article for Outside magazine, HH claims to have gotten the idea by observing fishermen cut holes in their synthetic layers to keep from overheating...

Re: Ultra-light but not ultra-precise
Watch the weight and complexity creep tho. At Point Reyes, messing around with a new system, an elderly hiker had a daypack-sized load and ukulele strapped to passed by. Even a "ray-way&...

"Rails to trails" to "Rails and trails"
All isn't lost. The Dallas to Denton Texas rail to trail was reclaimed by the railroad to install a light rail but they just moved the bike/hike trail over .... and if could happen in Texas......
