About Me Backpack mostly in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana (yes, there is backpacking here!), with occasional trips to Isle Royale NP and Shenandoah NP. Have backed off a half-step from true ultralight to "verylight." Husband, father, and Grandpa by good fortune; CPA by profession; also enjoy golf and chess.

Grandparents' dirty little secret
To let you in on a little secret as to why parents want grandchildren: "Grandchildren are our best revenge!" I know whereof I speak. My wife successfully put the "mother's cur...

Re: enjoying backpacking
For me, it was the realization that lighter gear was also simpler. First, I learned that I had to leave some things behind (the candle lantern, second pot, mug, change of clothes, etc.) Then, I lea...

Keeping legs dry with poncho
In the summer, I just let my legs get wet. In cool or cold weather, I switch the poncho for a rain jacket, rain pants, and pack cover. (This switch also lets the jacket and pants do double duty as ...

Re: Sleeping Shirt
In warm weather, I simply sleep in my hiking shirt (an Airius T-shirt.) While it's sometimes damp when I get to camp, it's always dry by the time I've cooked supper, set up my tent, and...

Not so bad a pillow
I lay my shoes at the head of the tent, toes toward my thermarest (this assumes a dry day - they're not caked with mud or completely soaked; if they are, they go in the vestibule.) The shoes gi...

Food for thought
You might consider the Hubba, if you only intend solo use. It's a little narrow, but plenty long, and is also 100% mesh (one of the things I love - on a clear night, it's just like sleeping...

Salathe
David: "Was" a Salathe owner - the Hubba replaced it for just a few ounces more in weight (combined Salathe + 8x10 Siltarp = 3 pounds; Hubba =3.5 pounds) and a lot more in convenience.

Just couldn't do it.
Franco, in the end (and after a night spent in each, back-to-back), I just couldn't abandon my Hubba. For better or worse (or orange fly), I've concluded it's the perfect tent for me. T...

Speaking from experience
I agree - it's very easy to be seduced into buying a tarptent by all the raves here. I had a Hubba, which always performed perfectly for me under all the conditions I encountered, but I just ha...

I've used this off and on for several years, in combination with both the Integral Designs Bug Liner and a bivy sack (most often the ID Salathe.) I've found it to be a versatile, simple shelte...

Snow Peak Mini Solo Ti Cookset
I got this to replace the Trek 700 pot. Then I became briefly enamored of the Jetboil PCS, which is well-designed but heavy. The Snow Peak Mini-Solo with a spoon and the Snow Peak Gigapower stove weig...

Jetboil Personal Cooking System
There's a lot to like about this stove. It sips fuel, boils fast, and is well thought out. The cup that protects the base of the pot during transport doubles (triples?) as a measuring cup and a sm...

I got this tent to replace my MSR Hubba because the SL1 is half a pound lighter. It's not quite as convenient to get into and out of as the Hubba, but that's the price you pay for the weigh...

Evernew .9 Liter pot
Excellent pot - the one I use with an alcohol stove. It's not my first choice with canister stoves, however. It's a short, wide-bottom pot, so it's a bit tippy on the narrow-diameter suppo...

I'd agree that this is a light, functional cookset. However, it has two flaws that keep it from being a 5: 1) The pots don't have measuring marks. This simple addition would greatly increas...
