I just took a winter camping course with the CMC last year. I have started to get back pain with a heavier load, so I want to lighten up and meet others in my area with the same mentality.

Agreed.
I still haven't bought my pack, I have an older cheaper Golite Pursuit that I'm using. But I have my eye on several 3 season backpacks that I want...and I'm waiting for the right moment.
