My Locale Central California Coast
About Me Started backpacking with the Boy Scouts in the 1960s, which should have cured me, but friends intervened. Failed PCT thru-hikes in 1976, 1980, and other adventures (whitewater rafting 1987-present) put backpacking on hold for a while.

In 1998 I read Jardine's PCT book and saw the light. I'm not super- ultra- anything, my base weight is about 13 pounds. But I'm back on the trails again.

Depends on your pack, food, beauty, and comfort needs
The HMG Windrider 2400 (40L) pack can carry a Bearikade Expedition bear canister, barely, thanks to the Y-strap on the top:    I used that pack for an unsupported 8-day trip this sp...

World's fastest battery packs?
In 15 minutes, these battery packs can store enough power to fully charge a smart phone over a couple of hours. This might be handy for thru-hikers who don't want to spend hours in town char...

Learned a lot about tent design
Mike, I learned a lot about tent design from your Kickstarter page. Now I understand why my ultralight silnylon tents are saggy every morning - and it's not my fault. I really, really lik...

Paul, You found some good statistics, thanks. The original HCN article was lots of anecdotes and poorly chosen statistics. The author should have done at least as much work as you did, and a lit...

Prevention; kinesio tape dual use?

Death of Backpacking: maybe not
I'll believe backpacking is dying when permits are no longer limited for popular trips. Some of the statistics cited in the article are misleading at best: "a well-known trend" ...
