My Locale Central California Coast
About Me Started backpacking with the Boy Scouts in the 1960s, which should have cured me, but friends intervened. Failed PCT thru-hikes in 1976, 1980, and other adventures (whitewater rafting 1987-present) put backpacking on hold for a while.

In 1998 I read Jardine's PCT book and saw the light. I'm not super- ultra- anything, my base weight is about 14 pounds. But I'm back on the trails again.

Why not 100% propane in canisters?
IANASG (I am not a stove geek), so maybe this is a dumb question: Given all the troubles vaporizing butane, why not make light canisters with 100% propane specifically for winter use? Why are...

Re: Bay Area Backcountry Camping - Books
Most San Francisco Bay area parks that allow backpacking also require you to stay in designated camp sites. One book I've used (but out of print now): Camping and Backpacking the San Fran...

Switched back and forth, stuck with internal frame packs
Started with external frame packs way back when (no-name Boy Scout, REI, Trailwise). Switched to internal frame in the 1980s - MUCH more comfortable, and smaller volume meant I had to carry less, e...

Henry Coe 7-9 days in April
I'm planning a solo Henry Coe State Park trip, starting from Park HQ, for 7-9 days in April. Given Coe's ups and downs, I'm probably good for 12-16 miles per day. I've done a few 2-...
