About Me After lugging around 45lbs+ through a Nat'l Park or two, I decided UL was the way to go and haven't looked back. URL is to my Geargrams list for most of my 3-season trips. My other hobby is photography, if the destination is worth it, then add 1 to 7lbs to my base weight for camera gear. In case you were curious, my profile avatar image is Buck (aka 9 mile) Creek of the High Sierra Trail in Seki NP.

Re: nilas
The Nilas is quite a bit lighter than the Peak XV (22oz versus 34.6oz), due in part to a lighter shell fabric (15d versus 22d). Both have a fair amount of pockets, but I'd give the nod to the N...

Re: Fit
For warmth, I find that tight closures at the hem, cuffs, and neck make the biggest difference. That's where heat can escape - if your down jacket is too big and air has an easy out, you can g...

Re: I don't get UL bivy
Basically what Anna said. The functionality added is the extra layer of protection it provides - a momentum fabric top provides bug protection, a limited degree of water resistance, decent wind re...

Re: Re: ugly, very ugly IMO
Yep, my backcountry kit won't win me too many fashion points, but it works well enough. For what it's worth, apparently the green (graze) isn't quite as garish as it looks in the stock...

Re: Bigger sensor than S100, RAW, f1.8 and more
The price makes me think twice, but other than the somewhat soft corners and CA fringing/loss of contrast at max aperture, I think the sample JPEGs look pretty good. ISO 125 is clean enough. This...

Re: Update
Sounds good. I guess I'd be down for a 72x20. I initially thought I'd prefer the larger size, but 72x20 could easily be folded to fit in the pad pocket of my SMD Swift, and I could leave ...

Re: Gorila SLR-Zoom
Maddeningly frustrating? Ha, that's to be expected when you mix ultralight backpacking with photography, and part of the fun. There's always a trade off to be made. The gitzo/rrs combo i...
