Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Will umbrella reduce water need?
I think an umbrella with reflective material may do more than we think. The extra shade will do a lot. In the heat of the summer, the difference between direct sun and shade is significant, especia...

Re: "Backpacking Light @ REI = LOL"
Given the medium (rei.com) I think it is a fairly good article. Given the perspective of most here on BPL, yes it does miss the mark for most of us. But I have bought some light stuff from REI such...

Re: 24 hour trip out of Santa Barabara, CA
Scott, I am not super familiar with the area, but the Los Padres forest is less than an hour away. I have done some hiking the the area. It gets hot in the summer, and water can be an issue. I a...

Re: This thread is more for people with NON-minimalist packs...
Aha! Actually, you make a good point about cutting stuff off. I accidently cut a strap off my ULA Conduit too short a year or two ago. Had to send it to ULA, who were great about installing a new o...

Re: lightest ankle gaiters.. from oven bags?
What purpose to you want the gaiters to accomplish? Keep crud out of your shoes, or water? For crud, try Dirty Girl Gaiters. For water, the ID eVents work. I have both, and they work. However...

Re: I don't think anyone said "essential"
I am not completely a trekking pole advocate, but there are times when they truly help. Of course the better one's physical fitness, the less poles are needed. And for those with old injuries o...

Re: CHALLENGE: How many ounces can you cut from your pack?
It really depends on the pack. Some packs come without all the extra frills, and there is little to remove except some extra lengths of straps. But kudos to you for getting rid of that much!

Re: Re: Is it Good Enough?
Zack, It is all good enough if it works for you. What pack to buy is dependent upon all your gear. As we par our gear, the volume and features of a pack's requirements decrease also. This...

Re: Daypack Suggestions Wanted
That Osprey Talon 22 weighs almost 2 lbs. More than my go-to packs for multi-day trips. For day hikes, I usually use a REI Flash 18 (10 oz & $30) or a TNF Flyweight Rucksack (12 oz &...

5/5 It seems that from earlier reviews, ULA has solved the communication issues with the addition of Casey to the staff, which must have solved that void. Not only was the communication great (t...
