My Locale Oregon and Washington
About Me I started hiking about 45 years ago. My first backpack was 40 years ago. I currently try to do one backpack trip of 5 nights every month (which can be tricky in the winter) 20 to 50 miles. Mostly I stay around Mount Hood, Columbia Gorge, Mount Adams, Goat Rocks, and the Olympic Peninsula. In recent years I have shifted to lightweight - my pack weight without food and water is about 15 lb (7 kg). I make a lot of my own gear - silnylon tarp-tent, bivy, synthetic bag, simple bag style pack. My sleeping pad is a Therm-a-Rest air mattress.

Re: VBL adds how much to my quilt?
If you have VBL liner, then you can't wear insulated jacket or vest inside because it will get wet VBL liner will add a little warmth, but nowhere near what an insulated jacket or vest will

Re: Curved waist line?
I first did a straight waistline, but then it was tight around my rear - looked and felt weird. I made the waist curved and it fit much better. Yeah - it's harder to sew - puckers and so ...

Re: Next project: minima vest or whitney down jacket?
Sewing arms on is more difficult - vest would be easier I think vest is better than jacket - you lose more heat from your torso than your arms. The skin temperature of your torso is higher than...

Re: Re: In Defense of "Make Your Own Gear"
quick estimates: Packs = 5 Tarps = 8 (if you count plastic prototypes) Stoves = 2 Windscreens = 3 bivy/quilt = 2 + materials for a third unless I decide to make it out of down WPB jackets =...
