About Me My name is Ryan Faulkner, i am 17 years old, and have been UL backpacking for about 7 years. I have been inspired by hikers like Andrew Skurka, and Ryan Jordan, and have dedicated my trips to going light and fast.
I plan on hiking the PCT and AT before finishing college, and after I hope to get some sort of a career in the backpacking industry.(I havent quite figured out how exactly, but i will :)
I have some big plans for the future, but ill keep those quiet for now ;-P

You wont need bear spray for the sierras, there are only black bears. you will need a bear canister or Ursack with aluminum liner.

I have the JAM, and I have used my dad's Mariposia.. My choice is the JAM, much more durable and comfortable, and the perfect size for my gear up to 10 days without resupply if you need more...

they do work, I never bring it backpacking, I just have it in my collection of little fire starting tools. Fun to bring on scout campouts, show how many different ways I can make a fire :)

only problem I see with carbon is that It will be more difficult to attach the adze/pick and the spike on the bottom.. this is the main weakpoint on the HElIX I do beleive

I missed Chris's comment while I was posting my own.. sounds like an excellent idea as well, you should definatly have some sort of insulator covering where you are holding the tool at least.

filling the pick with insulation is an interesting idea.. but I doubt it would be very durable. Filling it with some sort of nylon or plastic might work, but could crack if it got cold enough. ...
