My Locale Bridger Mountains
About Me I backback most frequently in the Rockies, and most often take three-day trips. Over the past fifteen years I've served as a Forest Service volunteer in Wyoming and Montana, doing trail maintenance. As I get older I'm always looking for ways to lighten my pack load but I'm far from ultralight. I especially like base camp trips, with day hikes from a fixed camp.

One pair more than I need
One pair of socks is dedicated for sleeping. One pair is dedicated to two trail days. So for a four-night trek, three pair - one for days 1 and 2, one for days 3 and 4, and one for sleeping. On odd...

two sources for less expensive tents
Someone has already mentioned LL Bean. Take a look at Sierra Trading Post too, which often has real bargains on great tents.

Window on an Unna
Peter's right, a window helps. Mine has the equivalent of a window - a tulle mesh panel on the door. Possible for me only because I bought the tent from Peter.

Three recommendations
Bill, I can speak to three options you might consider. 1. Hilleberg Unna or Soulo. Bombproof, easy to pitch, very compact. The Unna is my go-to shelter for bad weather. The Soulo is the same ten...

Very restless side sleeper
I'm a veteran tosser and turner, and claustrophobic as well. Mummies give me fits. Quilts were the answer for me except in winter. The past two winters I've been experimenting with a Nunata...
