My Locale Central Washington
About Me I work at Stevens Pass Ski Resort ten months out of the year as the Employee Services Manager (not Human recourses, that's different). The other two months (June and July) I hike, trail run, cyclocross and downhill mountain bike with my wife of 10 years. I live in a faux Bavarian tourist town called Leavenworth where some of the best hiking in Washington is literally out my front door.

I've gone to light, I need an accurate scale.
I have been using a Park Tools DS-2 Table Top Digital Scale to weigh all of my individual pieces of hiking equipment and a Park Tools DS-1 Hanging Scale to weigh my complete pack. After weighing al...

Re: Trail runners for feet like mine!
I have the same issue with the XA Pro. Try the Salomon XT WING 2. It has a much narrower heel cup. It also sounds like you might have a shoe that is a half size to big. I have had so many athletes ...

Re: Not all blue pads are created equal?
Try a Suluk46 PFS or PGS.The largest pad weighs 6.6oz the thinnest weighs only 2.2oz. I use a 1/2" thick 19" by 44" PFS and it weighs 3.5 oz. It isn't very durable, but it's ...

Re: replacement
If they are just starting to get holes, say they have “moderate thread wear”, I wouldn’t replace them yet. I used to wait till I could feel the hole in the side before replacement. If you’r...

Re: when to replace trail runners
With the XA Pro it is pretty easy. You will most likely wear a hole on the lateral side of the fore foot area just below the first lace loop. Buy the time this happens the foam in the sole has prob...

Made of money.
Here is a stake bag I made from two $5.00 bills and a $10.00. I figured I always bring $20.00 with me for emergencies. Why not have my money follow the “multi-use” rule of ultra light hiking. ...

I think I’ll order one.
Thank you everybody. I get paid on Friday so I think I’ll order one. All I have to do after that is wait for the pack and the 30º EnLightened EQ Epiphany Quilt I ordered to show up (it should be...

Oddly neither of these things have made it to my gear list.
I have a car key with a drilled out/shaved down handle (yes I know, I’ve gone too far). I carry a $20 bill just in case I need a ride to town in the rare case my car gets stolen (I’ve seen it h...

Re: murmur
Velcro has a tendency to fail when it is cold, wet, gets dirty, or has any load barring on it. Also it starts to lose its ability to hold the older it gets. I’m not completely against it but I wo...

Re: murmur
I have a possible dumb question. Do you have the z-rest in the pad holder or inside the pack? I don't like/trust velco for outdoor usage. I think I'm going to alter the closure system. ...
