About Me Grew up camping and backpacking in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. Then went to the east coast for grad school...then job...then family. Twenty years later we were able to reach escape velocity from Washington DC and relocated the entire family to the PNW. I've fallen in love with the Cascades as much as the Rockies. And we spend 4 weeks every year in Montana near Glacier.

A more expensive alternative is the Feathered Friends Daybreak hooded jacket. Although the 900+ down FW spec seems a little silly. http://featheredfriends.com/down-garments/garments/lightweight...

Re: Re: Reverse Engineered Encapsil Belay Parka
Is there any new news on Encapsil? Is Patagonia going to make any other products using this technology. Seems strange. If it is so great, why are we not hearing about other new products in the w...

Re: Re: Nine Trails
Roman, I would say it is very poor. Equivalent to one of those those super light (2-3oz) overly calendared nylon jackets like the Montbell Tachyon. The Nine Trails is very minimalist. No hood ...

Nine Trails
Separately, I just picked up a Patagonia Nine Trails jacket through their winter sale. I have no real experience with it yet. But based on the simple test of breathing through the fabric, I like t...

I would agree that this is an empirical question. Everything else is opinion and conjecture. But in the spirit of skeptical inquiry, it could simply be that he did not sweat because the R1 was no...

Re: Just a windshirt?
And if it is windy, and you have the R1 on top of the wind shirt, what insulation value is the R1 providing any more? A highly breathable layer exposed to the wind would not seem to have much purp...
