weight transferrence
It also can depend on the pack. 30lbs in a Vapor Trail feels really heavy, whereas 20-30lbs all kind of feel the same in my ancient 7lb Osprey pack. (Which is how people carried 50-70lbs, btw.)

Not sure about the iPhone, but on a Droid (Verizon) as long as you get the GPS fix, you can put the phone into Airplane mode and it will keep GPS going.
