About Me I grew up in VA exploring and camping the woods around my house. As a teen in the 80's I learned how to backpack by reading books. Back then my pack weight was a respectable 27 lbs and I hit the woods every chance I got. Once adult life took over it was rare to take an overnighter. I faced several challenges during my middle age life and turned to the outdoors to restore me. As my knowledge and skills advanced, my base weight dropped to below 5 lbs. With this came a freedom that I had never experienced before.

Copyright question
There is an illustration from a book copyright 1981 that I have wanted to post to the forums. I obviously don't want to do anything that violates the copyright so I am curios if anyone knows if...

Re: MYOG Bivy
Hi Anthony, Bivy looks great. I am always amazed at how people continue to take this simple pattern and adapt it. When I originally published it, I planned to have full instructions and photos but ...

Re: Iron Mtn. & AT Loop Anybody done this?
Luke, Here is a trip report I did AT/iron mountain loop. I'm guessing this is what is called the northern loop since I did not go all the way to Damascus. Its a really nice loop I enjoyed it. ...

Re: Gear recommendations for beginner backpackers.
Ben, I made a couple of gear lists specifically considering how one approaches UL backpacking at different levels, i.e just starting out (<20 lbs) to advanced (<5 lbs). One word of caution I ...

Re: Let's talk about cook pot lids
I admit to only doing this once in an attempt to push the boundaries of simplicity but my lid was my bandana folded over and placed on top of the pot. It worked just fine. But on my last few...
