FWIW... I used a $4 instaflator for 1500 miles on the AT. I still have it and it works AMAZING. I don't believe in the 6 months along the AT... I did NOT blow my mattress up once. Link...

After 1500 miles on the AT... I found...
PETZL TIKKA XP2 1) good performance down to -20F - Pretty sure that any conventional headlamp should suffice although, I would sleep with it at night, or keep it in a pocket at this temperature....

I did 1500 miles on the AT in 2011. I took along my MontBell UL Down Inner Parka. The greatest, the awesomest. PARKA, PARKA, PARKA! Don't skimp, get a parka. 7 oz for the whole thing...
