I wore out a spinnaker Simblissity trifold after years of everday use, replaced it with a slightly heavier dyneema gridstop version. I think they are perfect for everyday use...

Every on-line source I find gives an average of 1250 cals per entire MRE, and a weight of 18 - 26 ounces (depending on menu).

I think if goo penetrated the mesh it would help a bit, as I believe the wear is coming from the inside out -- toes rubbing on the fabric as it flexes...
