About Me I have been backpacking on and off in the western US since college in the early 1970's. Summer 1970 a bunch of us spent a week in the Three Sisters Wilderness in Oregon barefoot with blankets, book bags, and no proper gear at all. Now I coordinate youth backpacking for our Camp Fire council, and enjoy taking the kids to the mountains. I hope to take up more long distance walking after retirement.

OK, here it is. This isn't lightening our packs, so weight wasn't "front and center" for me. My scale is a Pelouze SP5, the little round gray postage scale. Haven in its ba...

We just sprung for two--yes! two!--Bearikade Weekenders (good for about 6 days per person with careful food selection and packing). Why not Bear Vaults? (After all, I can get employee pricing on ...

So, for several years now Robert and I have been taking the Integral Designs 8 x 10 flat tarp (no bivies) as our all-around shelter. Then last summer in the Sierras we ran into such a swarm of mos...

@ Lester. Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed reading the article. Water can be scarce in Central Texas for sure. It becomes an incentive to streamline the rest of each hiker's kit. I think...
