Mountain Empire Airport, http://mtnempireairport.com/index.html is within about 5 miles of the AT where it crosses underneath I 81 in Virginia. I can vouch for it being a very friendly airport.

For winter camping yes most definitely, but the ultralight isn't applicable. Check out Ray Mears, among others. When the temps are below 40 degrees I want a campfire, and "foraging"...
